Company Snapshot:

In the wake of former CEO Dennis Kozlowski's downfall, the conglomerate that he had built through a binge of acquisitions was broken up into three three publicly held companies: Covidien (formerly Tyco Healthcare Group), Tyco Electronics, and Tyco International, which retained the manufacturing conglomerate's Fire and Security and its Engineered Products and Services businesses. Tyco Fire and Security was renamed ADT Worldwide. Tyco International remains a large manufacturer of water control devices, home and business security and construction steel frames, and other products.

Delphi

Company Snapshot:

Delphi primarily makes various automobile parts. The company's technology is also sold for computing, communications, consumer electronics, energy and medical applications. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2005 and soon thereafter began operating as "debtors-in-possession" under court supervision, with the expectation of emerging from bankruptcy sometime in 2008. The company is a former division of General Motors (GM), separated in 1999.

The dark side of cyberspace

Review:

China is currently the world’s largest producer of electronic products. The IT hardware industry is one of the fastest growing industry sectors and has a modern and clean image. But in fact the working and ecological conditions in this industry are appalling. Brand companies have signed a common code of conduct for the sector. However, the code is weak by its content and there is no evidence of real improvement resulting from the activities of brand companies. More public pressure on brand companies is needed to push them forward.
