Operating in more than 160 countries around the globe Nike and is subsidiaries can be found in most shoe retailing stores. In addition to manufacturing their products Nike also runs a chain of retail stores known as Niketown. After receiving serious criticism in the late nineties for egregious labor conditions, human rights abuses, and environmental damage Nike has strived to clean up it's image.

In recent years they have adopted a corporate responsibility mandate which is overseen by various watchdog NGO's such as the FLC from whom they recieve yearly evaluations. Nike has also started it own oversight committee know as Nike Responsibility which aims at addressing issues of labor conditions, community reinvestment practices, and the production of greener products. Criticism of Nike continues however no recent allegations of malpractice has been given.

History

The company was founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Philip Knight, and became Nike in 1978. The company takes its name from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Nike markets its products under its own brand as well as Nike Golf, Nike Pro, Nike+, Air Jordan, Nike Skateboarding, Team Starter, and subsidiaries including Bauer, Cole Haan, Hurley International, Umbro and Converse.
