Company Snapshot:

PepsiCo is the manufacturer of the carbonated soft drink called Pepsi. The beverage was created in 1890 by a pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Pepsi has produced a variety of flavors, including Pepsi Ice Cucumber released in Japan, 2007. The corporation markets its product through celebrity endorsements and has established an international presence. However, there is controversy over the ingredients of the beverage. Countries, like, India have found that the drink contains pesticides which lead to birth defects. Nutritionists have also argued that long-term consumers risk a decline in bone health due to the phosporic acid found in the drink. The amounts of sugar in the drink could also cause some long-term consumers to develop certain types of diabetes. A movement against Pepsi succeeded in Burma and was fueled by Burma Rights Movement for Action. Pepsi's business partner in Burma was responsible for horrendous human rights violations. In 1997, Pepsi withdrew from Burma after global pressures from human rights groups.

Human rights:

In 2006, the State Human Rights Commission in Hyderabad, India ordered that the consumption of the soft drink Pepsi, and its rival Coca-Cola, be banned in all schools. The reasoning behind this decision is that high levels of pesticides have been measured in the soft drinks by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). Toxins found in the drink included DDT and lindane. The CSE reported that they carried out the same test on soft drinks sold in the United States and no similar toxins were found. Executives have made allegations against the CSE stating that their research findings have been manipulated by a political agenda. The claim made is that Pepsi and Coca-Cola have been singled out because they are a foreign owned corporation. Pepsi couldn't use this argument when it came to facing a lawsuit in its own nation. In 2006, California penalized Pepsi for failing to abide by Proposition 65 because the company did not warn consumers of lead found in bottles.
